The common Bedbug is a parasitic insect that feeds on human blood, being capable of feeding on their hosts without being noticed. Adult bed bugs are light brown to reddish-brown in colour being 4-5mm in length and 1.5-3mm wide. They have segmented abdomens with microscopic hairs that give them a banded appearance and are an oval flattened shape with front wings. The newly hatched are translucent, lighter in colour and become browner as they reach maturity. Bedbugs move in an ant like manner and emit an unpleasant odour when crushed.
Bedbugs can be found singularly but often in groups when established, in or around beds, couches/furniture, luggage, vehicles and in dark crevices, usually living close to their host. Bedbugs are usually nocturnal and mainly active at night making them hard to find. Their eggs can be found attached to surfaces by a sticky substance where they nest, often in fabric seams. Infestation signs include: finding Bedbugs, bites, blood smears and fecal spots on sheets and empty exoskeletons.
Bedbugs can have negative psychological effects and their bites can cause skin rashes and allergic reactions.
