Millipedes are found in cool, moist environments normally outdoors where they feed on damp and decaying wood and organic material . They become a pest when they migrate into buildings although they do not feed upon building structures or furnishings they are considered more of an annoyance or nuisance.

Portuguese Millipede
The Portuguese Millipede is slate-grey to black and 20 - 45 mm long.  It  is an introduced species and can reach plague in numbers. They are attracted to artificial lights and often invade buildings.  They can discharge a yellowish liquid when disturbed, it is not dangerous to humans or animals but can stain skin and material.
